POVERTY

Gender disparities in poverty are rooted in inequalities in access to economic resources. In Nigeria, like many countries, women continue to be economically dependent on their spouses. Lower proportions of women than men have their own cash income from labour as a result of the unequal division of paid and unpaid work. Statutory and customary laws continue to restrict women’s access to land and other assets, and women’s control over household economic resources is limited.

In many states of the country there continue to exist discriminatory customary practices against women are found when it comes to inheritance. Moreover, a significant percentage of married women have no control over household spending on major purchases, and are not consulted on how their own cash earnings are spent.
