USE OF SOLID FUELS
Women in developing countries are also more exposed than men to indoor pollutants resulting from the use of firewood and other solid fuels, due to their role in cooking and caring for children and other family members. This is not any different in Nigeria.
The constant exposure to the pollutants from the burning of solid fuels significantly increases the risks for developing lung disease and cancers which more women affected as a result of their disproportionate exposure rate.
The high rates of solid fuel use in the country, especially in the rural areas is as a result lack of a clear strategy of how to tackle shortages of and keep prices low for kerosene but at federal and state level. Kerosene is the more readily alternative to solid fuels but in its absence, people fall back in using solid fuels. With some states projected to having as much as 100% of the population using it as a source of energy for cooking.
